Dear Parents,

We had another week filled with lots of learning. Our first unit is coming to an end, and a new one is about to start. Below is a summary of our learning over the last week.

Math
As predicted, most students showed greater comprehension towards additive word problems. They did really well at making sense of the problems, and applying strategies that gave them accurate answers. Towards the end of the week, we began working on subtracting -10 from 2 and 3 digit numbers. With practice, the students were subtracting without the help of aids. In this upcoming week, we will continue working on subtraction, especially with borrowing and regrouping. I find this is a difficult concept as it is a new skill for students. I know that with a lot of practice, we will have a deep understanding of subtraction soon.

Unit
In unit we expanded our creativity and made a variety of different signs and symbols. The students are taking more risks, and are explaining their creations with deeper meaning. Towards the end of the week I introduced the students to their assessment. Each child will design a 4 or 6 way shield that expresses who they are as a person. I gave 3 must have symbols, and the children are choosing the other 1-3 symbols.  Must have - family, family name, country. I am really looking forward to what the children come up with, and once we are finished I would love for you to come inside our classroom and take a look.

Literacy
This week we talked about cross-checking. This is a comprehension strategy that helps monitor our understanding. Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? It was quite amazing seeing some of the children do cross-checking during their reading without even thinking about it. Strategies that help us monitor our understanding, is similar to a key that unlocks new information.

During our upcoming break I would love for you to collect any type of map that you come across. We will be needing them in our next unit. It can be a country, city, transport, theme park etc map. Any kind of map will be highly appreciated.
