Thank you so much for coming into the P2 classroom last week and getting to know the grade 2 programme a little better. I hope that you are feeling confident about the year ahead of us, just like I am. Below I will give you an overview of our week.
Math
To begin our week, students worked on an addition scavenger hunt around the classroom. They were able to use any strategy that was easiest for them to calculate. I really recommend that students focus on learning 2-3 different additive strategies so that they can use them to double check their answers. It shows me that the child is understanding numbers at a deeper level. As we have done a lot of practice and are now doing great with addition, I would like to go back to additive word problems. I predict that the students will comprehend questions with greater ease, and will be able to apply effective strategies. Once we have mastered addition, we will move onto subtraction.
Unit
This week we completed our family flags, yahee! As students were gravitating towards typical symbols to add to their flag (heart=love), I showed them some aboriginal symbols. These symbols look completely different to their meaning, which is the train of thought I am trying to get the students to produce. I asked P2 to create a story of how their family ended up in China, using aboriginal symbols. We then put the story onto a dream catcher, which was a fun activity to end our week. As a class we said that the dream catcher represented our families protecting us when we sleep.

Literacy
During our Daily Five time we worked a lot on stretching our sentences. Our sentences are currently very small and lacking details, therefore, we are using strategies to make them more interesting. We aimed to add who, what, where, with who, and why, all to the first sentence of our stories.
