Today we began the class with Daily Five. During this time we learnt a new strategy to improve our fluency, which was to reread. When we can not say words correctly, emphasis end marks, or we read in a way that is choppy and slow, we must reread the section so that it sounds smooth. Sometimes we need to read a page multiple times out loud to ensure that we are accurate and reading in a way that is captivating/interesting. We do not want to sound like a boring robot! Students have previously learnt how rereading can improve our comprehension, but now we are focusing on how it can improve our fluency.
In math we have been looking at addition problems using regrouping. Regrouping has proven to be a tricky strategy for the students to implement, so any extra practice at home would be wonderful. I have provided an example below.
In unit students have been working on a symbol of their very own. It is the last piece to our puzzle! Some students have created a symbol for their family name, what they want to be when they grow up, a special time .... there are many ideas that students wanted to express about who they are.
To end the day we worked on some grammar. Today our focus was using 'This is a .....' and 'These are ......'. Students had to think about singular and plural nouns that worked for each sentence. We use this and these for things that are nearby.
This - one person or thing nearby
These - more than one person or thing nearby
Questions you could ask your child:
What symbol did you work on today?
Did you choose to read-to-someone or do word-work today? Tell me about it?
Give me an example of a sentence using 'This is a ....'
Give me an example of a sentence using 'These are ....'
