Dear Parents,
Today we began with math. In math we worked on word problems in groups of 4-5. The students were given a range of levelled problems, in which they had to pick one to work on. The idea is to get students working on problems that are a just right fit (not too easy, not too hard). In the groups, students were asking each other wonderful questions like 'What does that number mean?' and 'Can you explain to me how you got that answer?'. I am very passionate about the students engaging in mathematical discussions. To end our math lesson, P3 came and versed us in the game '21'. P2 won!
Here is an example of one group's working out (they needed to prove their answer, three different ways):
Next we had Daily Five. Students learnt an important skill for listing friends in a sentence. When we list multiple friends we always want to list our name last using 'I'.
Incorrect - aizane, me, nolan and jayden read a book together.
Correct - Aizane, Nolan, Jayden and I read a book together.
At the end of our Daily Five, students had their spelling test. If students score 8 or more out of 10, they are allowed to study new words the following week. If they score 7 or below, they must continue studying the words they have been currently working on.
To end our day we had unit. Students are finishing up their explanation of their symbols, and publishing. These will be completed by the end of next week, bringing our first unit to an end. Feel free to come in and take a look. They are looking fab!
