October 24th, 2016

Dear Parents,

I apologise for not posting too much last week. As you know, sometimes we get a little busy. Let me update you on what we have been learning over the last week, as well as today.

During unit, the students have been learning about many key aspects of a map. Students have now completed a treasure map that has a compass rose and a key. Students used tea bags to make the maps brown, and scrunched them up to make them look old. Over the last few days we have been writing procedural steps that will guide others to the special location of the treasure (on the map). Today our focus was to add details to each of our steps so that it makes our writing more interesting to read. Tomorrow in math, we will look at the lines on our maps, as well as the lines of a globe and learn about co-ordinates (an important aspect to directions and maps). Maps are a great topic to integrate into our curriculum!

Here are some of our treasure maps.
In math class today we made a giant pictograph. Students had a lot of fun grouping the maps inside of our classroom, making tally charts, and making a huge pictograph. All 18 students worked together to make the graph below. It was great to hear everyone working together and helping each other with anything that was confusing or needing more work.

The large triangles stand for 2 maps. The half triangles (some have been glued the wrong way) stand for 1 map.
Students were given new spelling words today, although 2 students will work on the same words as last week. It would be really great to help your child understand the vocabulary of their spelling word.

Quick reminders:
- no clubs this week or next week
- the school is celebrating Halloween on Friday
- IXL has been paid for, I am just waiting on account information
- new homework has been sent home
