October 18th, 2016

Dear Parents,

Today we began the day with The Daily Five. Students were able to read to someone, listen to reading, and work on writing in their own chosen order. Students are slowly being able to choose which part of The Daily Five that they want to work on. As a class, we discussed different types of genres among books {please note that we did not discuss all genres}.

Next we had math. In math, students were each given a map to work with. On that map they had to calculate how many times a particular place appeared on the map - for example, some maps had 30+ parks, 3+ rivers, 12+ hospitals etc. Students located at least 4 different places and then created a bar graph with their data. Once the bar graph was created, students then made a 3D bar graph. Students had to listen carefully to instructions to make sure their graph turned out correctly.

To end the day, we had unit. Students either continued making their bar graph (a lot of integration was happening as students were examining maps to gather their data) or finishing the treasure map they started yesterday. Students who have completed their treasure maps will be able to make it look old by using tea bags tomorrow.
