Today the students began their first lesson completing their singular and plural nouns poster. It has been really great to see that the students are beginning to use the demonstratives that we have been focusing on for the last week - this, that, these and those. Many students are identifying these words in their reading, and using them in their writing and speaking. This is a great step in their learning.
Next, we did math. Lately in math we have been working on different additive and subtractive strategies. Today the students were given word problems in a group of 4-5. Their aim was to talk about their problem, and explain how they could get their answer. It was great to see that some groups were making sure that all students in the group could understand and answer the word problem. I am trying to teach the student how important it is to understand how we get our answers. A lot of learning occurs when students express their thinking, especially through mathematical discussions.
To end the day we had Daily Five. Students worked on 3 different rounds, and have built fantastic stamina! They are reading and writing around 15 minutes with no distractions.
