Dear Parents,
To begin the day we had Daily Five time. Students worked on read-to-self, writing, and read-to-someone. I was able to talk to many students about their book today, and many are demonstrating great comprehension. This is a fantastic skill, especially for those students whose first language is not English. Although we demonstrate great understanding of a text, we must now focus on our accuracy of the words, and how to decode unfamiliar words or spelling patterns.
Next we had math. Students continued with subtraction, focusing on borrowing from the tens column and lending it to the ones column. This was a confusing concept at first, but now most students are able to work these problems out. Please note that this is one strategy out of many for calculating subtraction. Students have been experimenting with different strategies throughout the semester. Below is a poem that can help us remember the steps of subtraction.
To end the day we created some singular and plural nouns to put onto a group poster. Each singular noun and plural noun had to be accompanied with the correct sentence.
