September 26th, 2016

Dear Parents,

Today we went straight to the library to choose some new books for the week. Students selected at least one book each, as well as found books from our own classroom library. It is great to see that students are selecting a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. This week I will be meeting with students to discuss their results from the reading test they completed last week.

Next, we did some word work. Some students were given new words for the week, whilst others continued with their previous words. It is really important that students study the words well and recognise the specific spelling patterns within their list. The words the students work on are spelling patterns that they do not implement often. It is specific to the individual, and is taught in the correct order that they should learn in (For example, short vowel sounds are taught before long vowel sounds). As the words get harder, students begin to learn new spelling patterns, as well as about homophones (two or more words with the same pronunciation, but different meaning). Every Friday we will have a spelling test with a maximum of 10 random words from the words the children have been learning. Spelling tests will vary from child to child.

During math class we reviewed all the content we have been learning about since week one. It was great to see that students have retained most of their knowledge within place value. This week we will have a math test, which will cover place value, comparing numbers, number lines, word problems, addition, and subtraction. I feel confident that the students will achieve well in their math test, however, we must continue to practice different word problems.

To end the day, we continued publishing our unit work. Some students have completed their posters, whilst others are still working on finishing. The students who finished their poster, worked on creating a symbol that represents P2.
