October 9th, 2017

Dear Parents,

I hope that you all had a fantastic week off last week. I will update you about our previous week at school.

Math
In math we were able to subtract 2 digit and 3 digit numbers. Students were using their number line strategies, mental math, splitting numbers etc to calculate their answers. We need to continue working on our 3 digit numbers, however, we are gaining more and more confidence with daily practice. This week we will do some more 3 digit activities, and potentially move on to subtraction word problems at the end of the week. I would like to continue working on place value for the next 2-3 weeks, so that the students have a very strong basis to use throughout the year. Students will complete a test of their understanding, and we will then move on to graphs.

This is our favorite strategy.

Unit
We wrapped up our unit by completing our 'Coat of Arms' shield. Students thought of some great ideas that represented who they are as a person. Here are some photos of some completed shields.

Literacy
Last week we worked on 'monitor and fix-up' strategies. We looked at a range of strategies that can help us with misunderstandings we have when reading. A lunch monitor or hallway monitor checks to see that everything is okay, and fixes things that are wrong. A good reader must also monitor their comprehension. They check their understand whilst reading, and pick a fix-up strategy if they are having trouble comprehending. Strategies include - rereading, adjusting speed, summarising, reread, read on to see if it becomes more clear  etc.

New homework was given out today. Please check class dojo to see the 5 point and 10 point activities. Please bring in maps if you have any at home as it will help us with our new unit.
