Dear Parents,
Today was a really fun day in class. Students began the day by making salt dough (a homemade play dough). To make the dough, students were put into small groups, in which they had to follow a set of directions. It was so great to see the students taking turns at pouring, mixing, measuring and kneading the ingredients. Once the dough was finished, students used it to create a country of his/her choice, making sure to include mountains, rivers, lakes, volcanoes (landforms). Students will be able to paint the dough once it hardens and drys.
Next, we had math. In math we have been focusing really hard on map scales. Students have had to convert various measurements. Although it has been difficult at times, most students have some understanding of scales. Today we worked on a map that got students to use a scale of 1cm=1km. This was a very straightforward conversions compared to the past few days. Other conversions we have worked on were 2.5cm=500miles, 1cm=10m, 5cm=1m.
To end the day we had one round of Daily Five. Students have been allowed to choose their activities. This has increased their motivation, and allows them to work on skills that they need to build on.
