August 31st, 2016

Dear Parents,

Today we began the day with unit. The students created a story about their family's journey to China. They created symbols that represented boys, girls, travel, china, country of birth etc. We used the aboriginal stories as inspiration to complete this task.

Next we had math. In math we continued with word problems. Today the problems were a little tricky for some students. My aim is to get students to think about math in a more meaningful way. By getting the children to provide evidence of their calculations and engage in in depth mathematical discussions, they are able to prove that they are calculating the correct answer. Tomorrow, I would like to give them an equation that is wrong, in which they must provide evidence and convince me that in fact the equation is incorrect.

To end the day we had Daily Five. We looked at an accuracy strategy 'blend sounds, stretch, and reread'. This will help students figure out words they do not know. We also looked at writing ideas by using - who, what, where, when, why? Our stamina is growing everyday. I am so proud of our progress in P2.
