August 29th, 2016

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Can you believe it is week three already? Time is definitely flying by.

To begin the day we 'shopped' for books in the school library and in the classroom library. Students are gaining great confidence in picking good-fit books. Once we finished selecting books, we then had 2 rounds of read-to-self and 2 rounds of work-on-writing. Our stamina has definitely increased. Today the students were able to read for 10 minutes, demonstrating great independence.

In math class we looked at different ways to solve a simple additive problem. For example: 8+9 = ? Students had to think about more than 3 ways to solve the problem. It was great to see all the different kinds of thinking in the class. One technique that I personally love is using a number line. We looked at ways we can use a number line to find out an answer. Students should be using 10 to figure out problems as it is an easy number to calculate with. For example: turning the 9 to a 10 and adding 7 would be a lot easier than 8+9.
During unit we continued with our all about me posters, as well as do some grammar. Students learnt about nouns, and were able to think of people, places, and things around the classroom. Tomorrow I would like them to be able to put nouns into sentences using short form sentences. For example: I've got a puppy. I haven't got a puppy.

Questions you could ask your child:
What is 6+9? Tell me 3 ways you could figure that out?
What is a noun?
What book/s did you read today? How could it connect to your life?
