Dear Parents,

Today we started our day at the library. Students were allowed to take 3 books. They tried to choose books that were a good fit.

I - pick a book by looking at the front and back
P - what is the purpose? persuade, informational, entertainment?
I - does it interest me?
C - can I comprehend it? can I understand what I have read?
K - do I know most of the words? (students should be reading books where they know majority of the words. If they cannot read many words, or they can read all the words, the level is not suited for them)

We then had unit. In unit we created a sensory poem for the symbol we created last week. We all have the same symbol, but have interpreted it very differently - learning, friendship, time, working. Students had to think about what their symbol looks, feels, sounds, taste, and smells like.

In math class we looked at comparing numbers <, >, =. Students did extremely well at understanding this concept. A great way to remember the symbols is to pretend the greater and lesser signs are alligators. The alligator always eats the bigger number because it is so hungry.

During our Daily Five time we continued to work on our reading strategies to build stamina. We also learnt how to independently write-to-self today. Students used similar strategies as they do during read-to-self.

Questions you could ask your child:
Tell me how you can pick a book?
What are three ways you can read a book?
Can you see any signs or symbols our house?
