Dear Parents,

Today we began the day with some Daily Five. Students learnt an accuracy skill of cross checking. When you come to a word that you are unsure of we need to think – Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? It was great to see that many students were checking for understanding throughout their reading. It really is amazing how capable they are at picking a book that fits their needs and reading level. A lot of students were able to retell their story to a friend.

Next we continued with our unit. The students were extremely knowledgable about signs, which led us to look more in depth about symbols. Symbols are signs that represent something else. Often it is difficult to interpret a symbol as we all have different backgrounds and experience. I brought in a very special charm bracelet from home, which had many charms that symbolised who I was as a person. This helped the students understand the difference between a sign and a symbol. For example; a butterfly doesn’t have to be just a butterfly, it could also symbolise friendship. During our independent time, some students created their own symbols. It was great to see them extend their learning!

In math we continued with place value. We continued looking at different ways we can make the same number – words, pictures, expanding, place value boards. Tomorrow we will be continuing with this and moving onto comparing. Place value will be very helpful when comparing two numbers.

One last task the students started was an ‘All About Me’ poster. They got to write many facts about themselves so that we can learn a little bit more about each other. Some students would like to bring in a photo. If you do not have an available photo, they may draw a picture instead.
